At Olduvai Camp, Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

My comparatively luxurious tent at Olduvai Camp on a stop at the world-famous Olduvai Gorge: a place made world-famous for the important fossils of early human ancestors that have been discovered there. Olduvai also encompasses a landscape of incredible natural beauty and interest. Dynamic possibilities for paintings were evident nearly everywhere I looked!

Oldupai is the Maasai word for the wild sisal plant Sansevieria ehrenbergii, which grows literally everywhere at Olduvai (a mispronunciation of “oldupai”). Those sturdy green sisal stalks seen here all around my tent are sturdy and razor-sharp. Careful not to impale yourself! Bull giraffe skull on tent post at Oldupai Camp
